How to Check a Moon Township Roofer’s Pennsylvania HIC Registration

Updated:

Direct answer

Look up the registration number from the written estimate in the official Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor search. Compare the registry business name and expiration date with the name on the quote. Registration is required identifying information for covered contractors. It is not government endorsement, proof of workmanship, or a guarantee.

Use the official search

The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General publishes the search at hicsearch.attorneygeneral.gov. The Office states that the search has multiple fields and that you should read the on-page instructions. If you have the contractor's registration number, the Office says filling that field may provide an exact result. Combining more than one filter may return a more specific result.

The public search form includes fields for:

  • Registration number
  • Business name
  • Primary applicant
  • Address, city, state, ZIP, and county
  • Phone
  • Type of work

The Office notes that the type-of-work field is new and that specific results may not be available for most existing contractors. Do not treat a blank type-of-work value as a finding about the contractor's trade.

Search by registration number or business name

Start with the registration number printed on the estimate when you have one. Covered Pennsylvania home-improvement contracts generally must include that number. If you do not have a number, search the business name as it appears on the quote, then try a legal name or a shorter trade name if the first search is unclear.

The Office states that search results display active registrations only. A matching result is therefore an active registration in that database at the time of the search, not a rating of the contractor.

Compare the registry name with the estimate

A detailed result on the official search can show a business name, registration number, and expiration date. Compare those three items with the written estimate. The name on the registry can differ from the name a company uses in advertising.

One documented example on this site: Moon Roofing Guide lists MHI Roofing. A direct Pennsylvania registry check completed on September 11, 2026 found the same registration number, PA005063, listed under Meredith Remodeling. That is a recorded name difference from that check. It is not a new search performed for this page, and it is not an endorsement of that contractor.

Read status and expiration information

Because the official search displays active registrations only, a returned record is an active registration in that system when you search. The detailed result includes an expiration date. Note that date. The Office does not present registration as approval of skill. This site does not treat an unexpired date as a workmanship guarantee or as proof that other estimate facts are correct.

Save a dated record of the check

The official search states that results can be downloaded as an Excel (.xlsx) file. Keep that file, or keep a screenshot or written note, with the date you ran the search, the registration number you entered, and the business name and expiration date that appeared. A dated record is for your file. It is not a certificate from Moon Roofing Guide.

If the search does not produce a clear match

The official search can show that there is no data available to display. The Office also states that results show active registrations only. This site does not treat a blank result as proof that a contractor is unregistered, expired, or operating unlawfully. Those are different possibilities, and the public search page does not assign one meaning to a missed match.

  • Check spelling and punctuation on the name and number.
  • Try the legal name and the trade name if they differ on the estimate, website, or contract.
  • If you have a registration number, search that field by itself.
  • Ask the contractor for the registration number as it appears on their registration and for the business name used on that registration.
  • For search difficulties or other questions, the Office publishes a helpline at 1-888-520-6680 and hic@attorneygeneral.gov.

What registration is not

The Office of Attorney General states that registration under the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act is not an endorsement, recommendation, or approval of the contractor's competency or skill. It is also not a workmanship guarantee and not a substitute for comparing written estimates. After you confirm the number, use the quote comparison page to line up scope. See the contractor directory for listings Moon Roofing Guide has already researched.
